How Well Stockd researches and corrects its content

Well Stockd publishes food-storage and food-safety guidance, which means a wrong number has consequences in someone’s kitchen. This page states where the numbers come from, what the byline does and does not claim, and what happens when we get something wrong.

Sources

Refrigerated and frozen storage windows come from USDA FoodKeeper and USDA FSIS. Pathogen-specific claims are checked against the FDA Bad Bug Book. Articles link to the primary source rather than to another blog that cites it.

Every storage figure on this site is a planning estimate, not a safety guarantee. No app knows how a particular item was transported, how long it sat in a warm car, or how often the fridge door was opened. The number tells you when to check, not that the food is safe.

When official sources disagree

They do, more often than you would expect. FoodKeeper publishes item-specific windows while FSIS publishes a general rule for cooked leftovers, and for some foods those two numbers are different. Cooked rice is the clearest example: FSIS’s general leftovers guidance gives three to four days, while FoodKeeper lists cooked rice at four to six.

The policy is to name both numbers and say which conditions each one assumes, rather than quietly picking the more convenient figure or splitting the difference. Where the safe answer depends on how the food was handled, the article says so and defaults to the more conservative window when handling is unknown. Two Well Stockd pages must never give opposite answers to the same question — if you find a pair that does, that is a bug and we want to hear about it.

The byline

Articles are published as Nora Ellison, Well Stockd Kitchen Editor. This is an editorial pen name representing Well Stockd’s own editorial process. The byline represents Well Stockd’s editorial process and is not a claim that a person named Nora Ellison holds medical, dietetic, or food-safety credentials.

We disclose this rather than letting a plausible human name imply credentials nobody holds. Where a claim needs expertise we do not have, the article cites the body that does have it and links out.

Use of AI tools

Drafting and research tools are used in producing this content. Every published storage figure, temperature and safety claim is checked against the primary source named above before it ships, and the editorial responsibility for what appears is Well Stockd’s regardless of what produced the first draft.

Corrections

Report an error to support@wellstockd.com with the page URL, the claim you believe is wrong, and the correct guidance if you have it. Food-safety corrections are handled ahead of everything else.

A verified correction is applied to the article and the page’s modified date is updated so the change is visible. Substantive corrections to a safety claim are noted on the article rather than made silently. Storage times are also revised when USDA guidance itself changes.

Independence

Nothing on this site is paid placement. No brand, retailer or manufacturer pays to appear in an article, a storage table or a substitution list. Well Stockd links to Walmart for one-tap shopping and earns affiliate revenue from it; that link exists because the shopping loop needs a retailer, and it does not influence which foods or recipes the app recommends. The site carries no advertising.
