Expiration dates

A food expiration date tracker with reminders

A free app for tracking food expiration dates in your fridge, freezer and pantry. The soonest dates sit at the top, and you get an email the day before something needs using.

Free to start · no item limit · works in any phone’s browser

Dates without reading every label

Type the date printed on a pack and Well Stockd keeps it. For fresh food you don’t date, it estimates a use-by date from typical storage times based on USDA FoodKeeper and FSIS guidance, and marks the date as an estimate. A date you type always replaces the estimate. Canned food and anything in the freezer gets no guessed date; type one if you want a reminder for it.

An estimate tells you when to check the food, not that it’s still safe. To see the storage times behind it, look the food up in our food storage guide.

A reminder at the hour you choose

Once you confirm your email, reminders are on: an email at 8 AM your time, the day before food reaches its date. Change it to the day itself or up to a week ahead, pick the hour, or switch it off. Every email has a one-click unsubscribe. You can also turn on notifications on Android phones and computers, and on iPhone after adding Well Stockd to your Home Screen.

On Sundays, a short email suggests up to three dinners that use what’s running out.

Use it before it goes

Home shows a Use soon list of what needs eating first. Every recipe is checked against your kitchen, so it says “Can make now” or exactly how many items you’re short. When you take food out, mark it used or tossed, and your stats show what got eaten and what got thrown away. Leftovers you save after cooking go into the kitchen as portions, and frozen ones can send a thaw reminder the evening before.

Getting dates in without typing them all

Scan barcodes one after another and review the batch once. Well Stockd looks up each product and adds a shelf-life estimate where it has one. You can also photograph a receipt, forward a Walmart order email, or say what’s on the shelf. Each one arrives as a list you check before anything is saved.

How to keep the whole kitchen counted

What’s free and what’s Pro

Free

Everything above is free: the inventory with no item limit, typed and estimated dates, email reminders, phone notifications, the Sunday dinner email, barcode batches, receipt photos and a few voice entries a day. Receipt photos use a monthly AI allowance.

Pro

Pro adds one shared kitchen for up to six people, so everyone sees the same dates, plus stocking from a photo of a shelf, more voice entries and planning weeks ahead. Pro is $7.99 a month or $79 a year, and every account gets 7 days of Pro free when it confirms its email, with no card.

When food runs out, it lands on the shopping list, and the list can go to a Walmart or Kroger cart.

What it doesn’t do

  • It doesn’t know when a particular item will spoil. Estimates come from typical storage times, so check the food itself.
  • It doesn’t read your purchases from a store account or loyalty card. Receipts come in by photo or forwarded email.
  • Reminders come by email or browser notification, not by text message.
  • There’s no App Store or Google Play app. It’s a web app you can add to your home screen.

Questions

Is there an app that tracks food expiration dates?

Yes. Well Stockd tracks them for free in the browser on any phone or computer. Type the date on the pack or keep the estimate it gives most fresh food, and it emails you before the date arrives.

What is the best free app to track expiration dates?

It depends on what you want after the reminder. A single-purpose tracker is enough if all you need is a list of dates. If you want the reminder tied to recipes you can cook and a shopping list, Well Stockd does that on its free plan with no item limit. Our side-by-side comparison of expiration tracking apps sets out the trade-offs of each, Well Stockd included.

How does an app know when my food expires?

It can’t know for sure, and Well Stockd doesn’t pretend to. For packaged food you type the printed date. For fresh food without one, it estimates from typical storage times and labels the date as an estimate. A date you type always replaces the estimate.

Can I get expiration reminders on my iPhone?

Yes. Email reminders work on any phone. For notifications on iPhone, add Well Stockd to your Home Screen first, then turn notifications on.
