Pantry storage
Do mixed nuts need to be refrigerated after opening?
No. Open nuts can stay in the pantry, though roasted peanuts, cashews and almonds keep longer in the fridge. FoodKeeper gives jarred and canned nuts two to nine months in the pantry after opening, but its entry for roasted peanuts, cashews and almonds allows only one to two weeks; if you are not sure which you have, go by the shorter one.
These times are a guide, not a safety guarantee, and a label that says to refrigerate comes first.
How we checked this: the storage times here come from the sources named on the page, and each one is checked against its source before the page goes live. Editorial policy
The oil in nuts is what turns them rancid. To keep them longer, freeze them: FoodKeeper gives jarred or canned nuts 6 to 12 months in the freezer. Source: Utah State University Extension: gearing up for holiday baking (opens in a new tab)

Unopened and opened
Unopened and opened packages keep for different times. These are the times the source gives.
- Unopened
- About 1 year in the pantry in a store-bought jar or can; for other roasted nuts, go by the package's use-by date
- After opening
- 2 to 9 months in the pantry, or 4 to 6 months refrigerated, for nuts from a jar or can. Opened roasted peanuts, cashews and almonds keep 1 to 2 weeks in the pantry, or 4 weeks refrigerated.
- Where to keep them once open
- Pantry or cupboard. The fridge is optional, and roasted peanuts, cashews and almonds keep longer there.
Sources and limits
The after-opening time runs from the day you opened it, not from the date printed on the package, so write that day down. Well Stockd doesn’t know when your package was made, bought or opened: follow the package directions, keep it somewhere cool and dark, and check the official listing when food safety is in question.
The storage times above are quoted from the sources below. They’re a guide, not a safety guarantee: quality varies with packaging, temperature and how the package is handled between uses. Nothing here overrides a label that says to refrigerate. This page was last updated .
