Paprika 3 costs $4.99 on iPhone and iPad and $29.99 each on Mac and Windows, paid once and sold separately for each platform, and Android has a free version that holds 50 recipes. If you already own it on the devices you cook with, stay: Paprika says the Paprika 4 upgrade is free and its new subscription is optional for existing owners. Switch if you want recipes already included and matched to what's in your kitchen (Well Stockd), a cheap list your household shares (AnyList), or a planner built around recipes you clip (Plan to Eat).

How much does the Paprika app cost?

Cloud Sync comes with the purchase, with no extra fee and no recipe limit. The catch is in one line on Paprika's own site: "each version of Paprika is sold separately." An iPhone and a Windows laptop come to $34.98. A second iPhone in the same Apple family costs nothing more.

Is the Paprika app free?

Only in part. Android and Windows let you try the full app with up to 50 recipes and no sync, for as long as you like. The iPhone, iPad and Mac versions have no free version. Past 50 recipes, or once you want sync, you pay once per platform.

What changes with Paprika 4?

Paprika 4 went into open beta for all current users on September 28, 2026. The new features are recipe scanning from a photo, saving recipes from TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube, clipboard import, shared cookbooks, advanced search, nutrition labels from USDA data, family accounts with separate logins, fridge, freezer and cupboard locations in the pantry, barcode scanning into the pantry on mobile, calendar feeds, Alexa, and widgets, Siri and Shortcuts on Apple devices. Paprika's note on the beta: "Afterwards, premium features will require a subscription."

Paprika's support FAQ fills in the rest. Once Paprika 4 is out of beta, the new features need a subscription. "Specific pricing has not been finalized yet but it will most likely be a (reasonable) annual fee with a discount for existing users." One subscription will cover every platform. For existing users "the subscription will be fully optional," Paprika 4 installs as a free in-place upgrade, and you keep everything you have now.

So the worry in r/PaprikaApp threads this month is about the future rather than your current copy. Owners are wary of paying again ("As long as v3 keeps working i don't need another sub") and of the new family logins landing behind the subscription. Some long-time owners also report being told to buy the Mac app again after a macOS update, and the replies point to copies older than Paprika 3. Paprika says the move from 3 to 4 is a free in-place upgrade, so a Paprika 3 owner shouldn't face that again.

Is Paprika worth it?

Yes, for one cook, or one household on Apple devices, who already has a recipe collection to put in it. You pay a few dollars once, the recipes live on your device and work offline, and the pantry tracks quantities, purchase dates and expiration dates.

It's worth less in two cases. If your household spans platforms, each new platform is another purchase, at least until the Paprika 4 subscription arrives. And if you don't have recipes to put in, it starts empty: Paprika is a box for recipes you clip or type yourself.

Paprika alternatives compared

Recipe Keeper is the closest thing to Paprika, down to the separate purchase on each platform, and it adds scanning from photos and PDFs. Pick it if you like Paprika's model but want photo and PDF scanning without waiting for Paprika 4.

Can you move your Paprika recipes?

Yes. Paprika exports your recipes as HTML or as a .paprikarecipes file from Settings, then Export Recipes, and its user guide describes both. Keep that file as your backup whatever you decide.

Well Stockd imports the .paprikarecipes file and shows every recipe as a draft to review before the batch is saved. The same import reads export files from Recipe Keeper, Mealie, Tandoor, Nextcloud Cookbook, Plan to Eat, MyRecipeBox, Copy Me That, Chowdown and Cook'n too.
