Containers and labels for fridge and freezer

Start with containers and labels you already own. When something is missing, choose it for the food and space you have rather than buying a matching set by default.

Shallow, covered containers

Use small, shallow containers for leftovers so food cools promptly. Pick a size you will actually finish, and check the manufacturer’s freezer and reheating instructions.

Freezer bags or airtight wrap

For longer freezer storage, limit air exposure. USDA notes that ordinary supermarket wrapping is air-permeable; overwrap meat or poultry for better quality.

Dates you can read

A freezer marker, removable label, or reusable date tag helps you identify what is inside and when you stored it. A label is a planning aid, not a food-safety guarantee.

For storage times and temperature guidance, use Food storage times. The FoodSafety.gov chill guidance (opens in a new tab) describes shallow leftover containers; USDA FSIS freezer guidance (opens in a new tab) explains air exposure and freezer burn.
