What can I use instead of Horseradish?
Horseradish and Prepared Horseradish are the same ingredient under different names, so swap one for the other 1:1. Another option is Wasabi Paste, use half as much; sharper, more sinus heat. The table below also lists Fresh Horseradish Root, Grated, Horseradish Sauce and Hot Chinese Mustard, 5 swaps in all.
| Swap | Ratio and notes |
|---|---|
| Prepared horseradish | Same thing, different name. Use it 1:1. |
| Wasabi paste | use half as much; sharper, more sinus heat |
| Fresh horseradish root, grated | use about half as much as prepared; far more pungent, and the heat fades within minutes of grating unless you add vinegar |
| Horseradish sauce | use about twice as much; it is already cut with cream, so the dish gets richer too |
| Hot Chinese mustard | use about half; the same sharp sinus heat from a related plant, but a clearly different flavor |
