Well Stockd is live: cook from what's already in your fridge

Launch announcement for Well Stockd, the kitchen app that tracks fridge and pantry inventory and matches it against more than 3,800 recipes.

Well Stockd is now open to everyone at wellstockd.com. It tracks what's in your fridge and pantry, then shows you which of more than 3,800 recipes you can make with it right now. The core loop, from inventory to cooking to the shopping list, is free.

The 5 p.m. problem

Most recipe apps start with a recipe, then hand you a shopping list. That works fine on a Saturday. It's useless at 5 p.m. on a Tuesday, when the real question is what you can make from the chicken thighs, half a bag of spinach, and the rice you already own.

So we built the app backwards. Well Stockd starts with your kitchen and works out the recipes from there.

What it does

You log what you have: item, quantity, and where it lives (fridge, freezer, pantry). The app compares that inventory against its recipe catalog, plus any personal recipes you add, and tells you what you can make tonight without a store run.

It also handles the near misses. If a recipe calls for fresh spinach and you only have frozen, Well Stockd knows the swap works and says so. You can accept or reject any substitution, and it remembers your choices.

Cooking happens in a full-screen cook mode with large steps and built-in timers, sized for a phone propped against the toaster or a tablet on the fridge door. When you finish, a review step deducts what you actually used, so the inventory stays honest without extra bookkeeping.

Shopping lists build themselves from what you cook and what's running low, and on Pro from what your weekly plan needs. Well Stockd matches list items to Walmart products, and you check the matches before the filled cart opens at Walmart. We earn a small commission on Walmart orders.

What's free and what's Pro

The free plan covers the whole core loop: inventory, recipe matching, cook mode, shopping lists, this week's plan by hand, and unlimited personal recipes. Pro is $7.99 a month or $79 a year and adds hands-free cooking by voice and a larger voice stocking allowance, planning weeks ahead with the shopping list written from the plan, household sharing, custom substitutions, and unlimited recipe lists. The trial runs 7 days from when you confirm your email and doesn't ask for a card.

Where it runs

Well Stockd runs in any modern browser. You can install it as an app on your phone or tablet, and it earns its keep on a cheap tablet mounted on the fridge door, where the whole household can see it. There's no app store download, and for a tool you check while holding a colander, we think that's the right call. The full feature list is on the features page.

Questions we keep getting

Do I have to weigh everything? No. Quantities are loose on purpose. "Half a bag" is a valid amount, and the app works with honest estimates.

What if someone else does the shopping? Household sharing puts everyone on the same inventory and the same lists. When someone buys milk, everyone's list updates.

Does the free plan expire? No. It's a real free plan, not a trial. The 7-day trial only applies to Pro features.

If you're still comparing options, our guide to apps that track food expiration dates covers the field, including where Well Stockd wins and where it doesn't.
